Once upon a time, record execs corralled their chart-topping artists, put them on a bus and sent them out to barnstorm small town theaters across the country. These legendary label package shows gave each act a chance to perform its hits, but also inspired more and more impromptu collaborations as the tours rolled on. Now, Portland’s Never Lucky Records brings back the excitement of a label package show for one night only in the venerable Old Liberty Theater in Ridgefield, WA. It’s a Honky Tonk Review featuring Wes Youssi and the County Champs, James Sasser and Rich Layton & Tough Town. Each act has released an album to critical acclaim from the country and Americana music press. Wes Youssi takes his inspiration from the rough-around-the-edges country music of the late ‘50s and early ‘60s. James Sasser is at home on the jukeboxes of the late ’60s and early ‘70s when country shared Top 40 radio with rock and roll and pop music. Rich Layton puts all those influences and more through “The Swamp-o-lator,” as the house band at the crossroads of twang and tremolo.
